Angband is a roguelike game loosely based on J. Tolkien's books set in Middle-earth, but with stuff from other games, mostly Dungeons & Dragons and Rolemaster, as well as original content. Along with NetHack, Dungeon Crawl, ADOM,. Angband is another of the more modern, more popular Rougelike games. It is the heir to Dungeons of Moria, another popular dungeon hack. Angband is based on the world of Tolkein’s Middle-Earth, of Lord of the Rings fame. The goal is to penetrate to Morgoth, who resides in a “prison of iron” (Angband), and kill him to receive his crown, which holds the Silmarillion jewel. Angband, also known as the Iron Prison, was Melkor's 2nd (and last) fortress of Middle-earth. It was destroyed at the War of Wrath at the end of the First Age. It first appeared in The Silmarillion. Angband was a stronghold that was built beneath the Iron Mountains, and under the three gigantic volcanoes of Thrangorodrim, the largest mountains in Middle-earth at the time. Angband seems to have embraced the concept that 18 is the maximum and cannot be improved upon and decided to go with percentiles at the top all the way. A +1 item improves it by more than 1 percentile, because a +1 is one full attribute point, while one percentile is not. Welcome to the Angband Forums.
