Hi, I'm fairly new to recording and have started by playing around with Adobe Audition 2.0. I was wondering what software drum samplers there are out there which I could use with Adobe Audition 2.0 to add drums to my recordings, anyone have any ideas? Audition 2.0 is a complex and very capable Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) for editing wave files either on their own, or in a multi-track format such as you?d see in a recording studio to create a CD album. You can use it to make film soundtracks by syncing the music to a video window, or for putting together the latest Top 40 hit.

in case you need some guidance how to apply, prepare or attend an audition.

Why are you auditioning or some reasons for entering an audition

1. To get a job
2. For objective and subjective level assessment:
Getting feedback from the artistic director or choreographer and/or watching and getting to know the other dancers around your field.
3. Gaining experience:
Even if you are not looking for a job yet, you can still and should go for the experience (especially if the audition is in your city, so it doesn`t cost you anything) to get the routine in auditioning, so when it will matter, you will already know how it works. And of course to get to know people as indicated in no.2 above.
4. Getting to know the company:
Remember; at an audition you also have the possibility to look around and get to know the company and its surroundings better. How do you like the city, the studio, the working ethic of the company, the repetiteurs, dancers, etc.

Find out what you want and look for matching companies/choreographers

1. How to find it out:
Know yourself and know what you want to get out of this profession. There are dozens of different reasons to choose a company:
-a specific location where you want to live (country/city)
-or you love and want touring
-you adore a certain style of dance, the choreographer or a specific company
-you want to achieve a certain status (soloist, director etc.)
-you want to be recognized, appreciated and/or famous
now that you know what you are looking for, just match your preferences with the existing companies, choreographers.
2. How to find companies, choreographers:
At this step your greatest help will be Google, Youtube, Vimeo furthermore Facebook, Google+ and your colleagues worldwide. You have to know, it is a time consuming process and you have to keep up your curiosity as you will be looking for a diamond in the rough.
-How to find companies:

so on.. you got the idea. 😉
-How to find choreographers:
A good way to start is to browse from a repertoire company`s history and see the names of the choreographers they worked with. Such companies are NDT, Cedar Lake etc.
An example how to do this: google #ndt #choreographers
http://www.ndt.nl/en/people?search[category_id_equals]=8
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nederlands_Dans_Theater#Guest_choreographers
Now that you have companies and choreographers listed, search the names on Youtube get lost in the sidebar and just let yourself be lead by youtube.
3. Study and know the companies:
Now that you have names listed, in order to choose a company for yourself and also to be able to write a great cover letter, you will need to know quite a lot about your chosen companies. Look up the companies’ website, check their artistic vision, videos on Youtube, reviews on the net, cv of the members etc. Collect available info about the companies. Don`t get overwhelmed though, you don`t have to be a Sherlock Holmes just try to get a fair overview.

When is a good time to apply to an audition?

It is obviously a good time when a company is opening an audition. There are auditions through out the year however the most happens from Januray to March. This is the time when institutionalised companies are filling their vacancies.
Keep your eyes open and if you find an interesting audition make sure not to miss the application deadline.

What if the company you like is not offering auditions?

Actually any time is a good time to start building a connection. I think there is no company or choreographer on the planet who would get offended because you like their work. And after all what can go wrong? In the worst case they will say “sorry no openings at the moment” or “follow us on facebook for our audition dates”. Or you can also find out that they are actually interested in you. But the bottom line is if you want to work with someone or get into a company, in one way or another you will have to let them know you exist.

Applying for an audition

In general keep it in mind when you are writing to a company you will be in communication with another human being. It means you have to follow basic social conventions, show respect but don`t get too complicated in your big excitement either. To avoid any confusion and misunderstanding follow the next rules: don`t ever assume, be clear, be unmistakable and ask for confirmation if it`s necessary.

How to apply:

1. Read the application requirements carefully:
What are they looking for and what other info, details they are asking for.
2. Letter:
In the subject write why you are contacting the company, so later on it will be easier for them to find your letter. Always start your letter by addressing the person you are writing to, then introduce yourself very shortly and then the cover letter (itself) follows. Use formal language, be brief. Attache your cv and a video if it´s available.

3. Cover letter:
To be able to write a good cover letter you have to know your strenghts and the profile of the company you are applying to. A cover letter has to include the reasons why you are interested in the company, why they should hire you, what you have to offer to them. Be specific and highlight your positive attributes that match the company`s profile. For example if a company has 200 shows a year, they probably look for a reliable and consistent person, while a touring company with a lot of new productions would probably prefer someone creative and flexible.
4. CV:
Your CV should never exceed an A4 page and should always contain your name and contact info. Other relevant details are your education and training, professional experience and other skills that fit into the company`s profile.
The same applies to your videos: they should match the company`s profile and should be short.

Note: you shall not lie, however you have to be able to communicate your skills the best possible way, to make them the most beneficial for you. For example if you have just finished school and a company asks for your professional experiences you should not say that you were a soloist in a company for 5years. However, if you have done school performances, you can say that you have X years of stage routine.

Types of auditions

There are different ways of companies for hiring, ranging from big public auditions to accidental meetings.

Audition 2.0

Let`s see the most common types of auditions.

1. Public audition:
Usually it is open for all kinds of dancers and only registration is required. Expect a big crowd.
2. Invitation only audition:
When a company has a specific idea what they are looking for, they make a shortlist of the applicants (based on the cover letter and CV).
3. Private audition:
You can ask for and arrange a private audition with a company director, choreographer.
Note: plan your visit to be at least 3 days in case the director gets held up with something.
4. ”Taking company classes”:
Taking company classes can be a synonym of private auditions especially with companies that are not offering auditions at all.
Note: when you are taking company classes you should plan your visit to be longer, at least a week or two, so you really have time to see and work with the company and also you increase your chances to meet the artistic director (since it is not an official audition the director might not be in the house every day). When you are taking company classes think of it as a visit: I highly recommend you to take part in the company`s life as much as you can. Spend time with company members, attend rehearsals if it`s possible etc.

The audition

“The fleshmarket” as some might say. Except that raw meat can`t sell itself. It is time to understand the real meaning of the free market economy: demand and supply. You have to know what you are selling to whom. Furthermore your task at an audition is to show your best possible self. As simple as this: they won`t hire you for what you can`t do. They will hire you for things you can do with excellence.

Note: at an audition they are not only looking at your technique but also your personality so a piece of advice: more character less attitude.

1. Be prepared for everything that can happen to you:
An audition is always stressful, therefore the least you can do to help yourself is to be as prepared as you can be, so you don`t have to worry about things that you might have done better or things that you could have brought with you but you didn`t etc.
A few more tips: if you are not sure when will the audition end, be prepared for the longest possibility. If you are not sure about the catering facilities at the audition, bring food with you. And last but not least, about your clothing: have multiple options (long, short), be prepared to have a dress with you that shows your figure and don`t dress up in one color, for example if you are wearing all black and you find yourself in a studio with black floor and black background you will disappear in the background.
2. Know yourself and behave accordingly:
For example if you happen to be a slow learner, you should definitely not go in the first group etc.
3. Manage your energy
4. Interview:
Write a list of your 10 virtues and weaknesses (this is only for yourself). When asked to describe yourself pick the two most specific good attributes of yourself that matches the company`s profile. If asked about your weaknesses pick the one less unfavorable so you can still be honest but you don`t doom yourself. And in general be genuine.
5. Ask for feedback
6. Go home with an unbiased conclusion for yourself: what you did good and what you did wrong. Don`t let your ego misguide you, don`t let your imagination lead you on. Build on your experiences rather than your fantasy.

Note: don`t get ever personal. You have to understand if you don`t get a job it is not a criticism of your personality therefore it should not influence/ruin your self-esteem. No matter how you are progressing in your professional life you can still be a beautiful person, valuable member of your family or a complete sh**head. 😉
